Living in Los Angeles– you get a feeling of what the sports that are the most talked about. Of course– you got to mention USC, and I guess you can mention the “other school.” 🙂 Then you have the professional sports like the LA Lakers, LA Clippers, LA Kings, and the LA Dodgers.

Out of this group– where does the LA Galaxy fall into? Personally– I didn’t even know that LA even had a soccer team, or even really cared (as you can see, I am not a soccer fan). But they have gotten some media coverage because they signed David Beckham. The real question is this: is this just a PR campaign to generate publicity, and how will this be viewed in the public?

My feeling is simple on this. The LA Galaxy is pulling all the stops to promote this one player, and I mean ALL the stops. I was amazed that they even had a Super Bowl ad that featured Beckham on it– and it was in my opinion making fun of him. Secondly– does the public or the sports community really care? Probably not– there are other sports to follow and who will even go to a LA Galaxy game when you have two nationally ranked teams, two basketball teams with tradition, a baseball team down the road, AND arena football. Also– do we care how much he is making? Nope– it’s only on the minds of the accounting and finance people at the LA Galaxy.

My point is simple– sure, the LA galaxy will get some coverage due to getting Beckham for their team– but they have to prepare to do something AFTER this has passed this year and in the future.

No team, no matter what sport, can depend on one person to rescue a franchise.
