There are many athletes that present an image of who they are when competing in their sporting events. Some like the “tough guy” image, and then there are some athletes that have to have a certain designer make their outfits.  Whatever it is– it does influence how the public and others view you.  I have always been interested in what makes certain athletes more appealing than others and how their personalities have influenced this.  I’m actually writing my Master’s thesis on this similar topic, but relating it to other industries.

Looking at who is successful in athletics, I have noticed a few similarities.  People do make first impressions of people and judge others based on their appearance.  Here are some points that I have noticed.

Appearance:  Most of the athletes that are respected and liked are well-groomed and look neat.  There are definitely some stereotypes out there for certain athletes to act a certain way.  I know as a former shot putter, people viewed these athletes as being “big”, “scary-looking” and “rough around the edges.”  Well– this doesn’t have to be the case!  I felt that this didn’t represent me, and that even though I was doing an event that had this stereotype, I felt that I was quite feminine.  In this case, if you use your personality to show people– hey, I’m not like other throwers, and here’s why– then you can stand out from the crowd.

In order to stand out from the crowd, you have to go against these stereotypes based upon appearances.  People want to look at an athlete that can take care of themselves and are approachable.

Style:  I am sorry– but green sports bras and shorts with words on them are not fashionable!  Fashion Crisis Alert!  In order to present your personality effectively, you have to have a certain style that fits.  I’m not saying that you have to go all out on Gucci or anything like that– but for the best results– there needs to be class and sophistication.  So, if you are known for wearing a certain athletic label (ex. Under Armour or Nike), then stick to it.  Also, for a big event, you really want to showcase yourself.  There are many ways to do this, and I suggest this place is a good starting point! 🙂

Being YOU:  The best thing that an athlete can do is be themselves and be relaxed.  If you try to be like someone else, then how will people really get a sense who you really are.  One of my favorite movies growing up was “Who’s Harry Crumb” with John Candy, and he said in the movie a classic line “I’m my own Crumb.”  I think he is right on– you want to be Focus on how you personally can present your personality to the rest of the public in the best way possible.

If you have a bubbly personality– go for it.  If you are shy– well, try to work on that.  But the thing is– there are just certain things that you can’t fix.  A real “prima donna” won’t change over night to become little Miss Sunshine– not gonna happen!  Stick to what you have and work with it.

I hope that these points help out!  And remember– be yourself and have fun! 🙂

Best Wishes,

Karen
