When I saw this news story about Barry Bonds– I was not surprised at all.  It was like, well– everyone knew that he was doing something– and now here is the evidence.  It appears that Bonds failed an amphetamine test last season in 2006.  The question I have is– why bring it up now?  Why wasn’t this announced months ago?

When questioned about the amphetamines that he tested positive for, he said that he got it from one of his teammates, Mark Sweeney.  This is really a PR disaster for Bonds– you never make excuses or blame others for your actions.  It would have been better for Bonds to admit the truth that he did take the amphetamines and face the consequences.  After a period of time (and probably pressure from the SF Giants), he made a statement in which he says that he did not get the amphetamines from Sweeney

Here is his statement to ESPN:

“He is both my teammate and my friend. He did not give me anything whatsoever and has nothing to do with this matter, contrary to recent reports.”I want to express my deepest apologies especially to Mark and his family as well as my other teammates, the San Francisco Giants organization and the fans.”

This statement to me sounds like someone in the Giants PR department told Bonds to say certain things–it seems too well-crafted to me.  This incident will only prove the fact that Bonds will always have a shadow of suspicion whereever he goes because of all of the drug accusations and now this failed drug test.  My advice to Bonds is to retire and leave the sport of baseball.

With the recent events of Mark McGuire and not getting into the Baseball Hall of Fame, my guess is that Barry Bonds will also be left out– no matter how many homerun records he has broken.
