One of the things that athletes competing in college have to do is promise the coaches and athletic staff that they will not participate in certain activities.  Why you may ask?  There are certain activities that are labeled “risky” and if an athlete gets injured, they have a chance to lose their scholarship and their place on the team. I ran into this at all three universities that I competed for, and the activities that were always on the list were skiing, ice skating, water skiing, and beach volleyball (don’t ask me why this was on!)

I always wanted to learn how to ski and ice skate, but I felt that I couldn’t when I was a track and field athlete. But today, I accomplished one of these activities.  I went for the first time ice skating!

My friend and fellow Ph.D. student Simon and his wife Susana and their two kids went to the Ice Chalet in Knoxville today.  It’s pretty close to the University of Tennessee campus, and I was amazed with how packed it was!  It was a family friendly environment and a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon!  Before we went skating, I seriously thought that I would definitley spend my time falling down, but I only slipped twice, so that is good! 🙂 I have a whole new respect for hockey players and figure skaters– it took a lot of energy and concentration to not fall down!  Plus it was motivating to not fall down on the cold ice! 🙂

Well, I am not sure if I am ready to be skating with the stars anytime soon, but it was a pleasure to be with friends and learn how to finally ice skate! 🙂  It was a lot of fun, and what a great way to be active (my legs are definitely sore, but it is all good!) 🙂  Thanks for a great time Simon and Susana!

So next time you all want to do something fun, active, and with friends– go ice skating!  It is a blast! 🙂 Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen 🙂
