Karla's drawing "We will never forget" for 9/11

Ten years ago, our nation experienced the worst terrorist attack on our own soil and changed the way we live our daily lives on September 11, 2011.  These terrible events have transformed how we see the world not only abroad, but also domestically as well.  Our daily lives have been impacted by these events across society.  This is a day I will always remember as one filled with such strong emotions and prayer – I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing at this very moment ten years ago.  I just began my college experience at SMU in Dallas, TX where I was off to my first class of the day (Intro to Psychology).

The news of the events both in New York and Washington D.C. shook the core of the students and faculty at SMU – and the day was spent in front of the TV to hear the latest of what was going on.  We did not have track practice that day, but I do remember my international teammates coming together to support the American athletes during this trying time.  I also remember sitting in my dorm room with my roommate to hear President Bush’s speech.  On this day, ten years ago, we changed as a nation, and I felt I changed as a person on this day as well.

I would like to take this time to encourage everyone to take a moment to pray and remember those who lost their lives on this fateful day ten years ago.  To all of the brave men and women in the twin towers to the honorable firefighters, medics, and police officers who lost their lives in protecting others during this horrific event.  I also want to to thank all of the brave men and women serving in our armed forces – including my own family members my sister Kristin and Uncle Jim – along with my friends who have served overseas in protecting our daily freedoms in making the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our freedom and country.

Today, we all should give tribute to the remembrance of 9/11 – what will you do?  Share your stories and tributes with others both in person and online, and also support the armed forces with their efforts – there are some great organizations you can donate to.  Also, here is one of my favorite singers Toby Keith and his song “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue.”
