When you think of social media and sports, there is usually one name that comes up over and over again. She is truly one of the best professionals in the business and her blog and Twitter account are always on must-follow lists, podcasts, and features.

The professional I am talking about is Jessica Smith, or otherwise known as @WarJessEagle on Twitter.

I have been following Jessica for the past few years and I realized we missed each other when we were both undergraduate students competing in track and field in the SEC (Jessica ran for Auburn and I competed for Florida). Good times! Plus, she is also working for one of my FAVORITE brands of all time, Under Armour.

One of the great things I think separates Jessica is the fact she is super insightful in her commentary and insights on her blog and Twitter, generously shares her perspective on trends in the field, but also does a superb job at highlighting teams and professionals in the field for their social media and sports contributions.

I had the chance (and honor) to be part of a great group of professionals to talk to Jessica about some of the benefits, tips, and best practices of networking in the field. Jessica wrote up this in a great first post in this new series she’s creating for her blog, and here’s the link and below is my contribution:

Networking takes time and effort, but it also takes a certain mindset when it comes to communicating and engaging online in this field. It’s been great to bounce off ideas, talk about the love of coffee we all have (it’s a must have and a food group!), and giving back to those who are getting their start in the field. There are a lot of great points here from professionals across different sport industries, and all of these are applicable for students to take advantage of for internships and future job opportunities.

Of all of the communities I am part of, I would say the #SMSports community is the most proactive, positive, and mentorship focused I’ve seen and been a part of.

Special thanks again to Jessica for starting this new series and sharing these insights with all of us. This will definitely be part of my reading list for my classes! Thank you for everything you do for the #SMSports community.

I hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,
