I had the opportunity and chance to go to Nebraska this week to do a presentation on social media and crisis communications.  This was chance for me to go to Nebraska for the first time in about eight years – last time I was in Nebraska was when I was competing in a track meet at the University of Nebraska for Florida.

I was told on my way out to my hotel in Kearney about the huge growth of the medical profession in the city, thanks to the university as well as the hospital.  I could definitely see this – and it was wonderful to have a chance to talk with these professionals about the growth and increased focus of new media technologies not only for professionals in the area, but also for their students.

The Center for Preparedness Education, along with Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, sponsored their 10th annual preparedness symposium in Kearney, NE.  They conduct four a year around four cities in Nebraska.  This brings leaders and professionals across various disciplines including communication, emergency management, public health, and law enforcement/fire.

I was approached by the organizing committee panel for the symposium about coming to the symposium to come and discuss social media and crisis communications.  I was truly honored by this opportunity and was excited about my presentation.  Little did I know it was going to be a full house for my presentation in the morning.  I have to thank John Lowe from the Center for Preparedness Education for taking this picture during my presentation.

My presentation at the 10th Annual Preparedness Symposium in Kearney, NE

I had the pleasure to meet some amazing professionals who are part of the emergency management, public health, and crisis communications community in the state of Nebraska.  I felt very welcomed and part of the group involved at the conference. Also, I would like to send out a special thanks to Kim Stephens, who is one of the leaders in the area of social media, crisis communications, and emerging technologies, for letting me know about this opportunity.  Thanks Kim! 🙂

Overall, I truly enjoyed my time at the symposium – great professionals, wonderful learning experiences from professionals across disciplines, and amazing networking opportunity.

Hope you all are have a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
