One of the biggest events we have here in Louisville is of course the Kentucky Derby, but we also have the Kentucky Derby Festival that occurs right before the Derby. This is a wonderful event filled with many exciting events like the KDF Half and Full Marathon, Thunder over Louisville, and the Pegasus parade to name a few.

My social media class (#Freberg13) had the opportunity to hear a guest presentation by Robert Young, who is the VP of PR for the Kentucky Derby Festival. Robert and I first meet at a ICOMM (our student communications groups at UofL) panel on social media last year – Robert’s work with the KDF is fabulous!

They have done so much to engage not only those participating in the various activities on social media, but are always on the cutting edge when it comes to social media strategy. The KDF is very active on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram as well.

When I was organizing my social media syllabus for this fall semester, I knew that Robert would be a great guest speaker to have in my class. As a result, my students raved about the presentation by Robert on Twitter and even in their blog posts. Here are some of the blog posts my students wrote about Robert’s presentation in class yesterday:

Overall, it was a wonderful presentation by Robert and the students really were engaged in hearing his perspectives, stories, and expertise on how the KDF uses social media to engage with the media, runners in their marathon, and visitors who come from all over the place for Thunder over Louisville.

Thank you again Robert for taking the time to share your experiences and insights with my students – we really appreciated it!

Hope you all are having a wonderful day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
