Happy Derby, everyone!

Yes, it is that time of year where thousands come down to Louisville and Churchill Downs for the races and see all of the beautiful horses compete in one of the most iconic races we have in horse racing. And of course, this is all located basically right across the street from the University of Louisville.

One of the things our department does at the end of the spring semester is get everyone together and go to Dawn at the Downs. It’s a breakfast event where you are up in Millionaire’s Row and you get to see the beautiful view of the racetrack from above. Good times with colleagues and friends to celebrate a successful end of the academic year. This is my first time at Dawn at the Downs and I always take something away from the experience.

I did do something different this year compared to others – I went full out with the Derby fashion. You see a range when it comes to fashion at Dawn at the Downs – it’s not as formal as Oaks or Derby, but you still see lots of hats. However, I went ahead and thought to myself – this year I want to wear my derby hat to the event. I went and got this beautiful hat from Louisville Dillard’s. It reminded me of the hat Grace Kelly wore in “To Catch a Thief” (one of my family’s favorite movies).

The morning and overall experience at Churchill Downs was great. I got a lot of compliments on my hat at the races and it was fun to see all of the beautiful horses. It reminded me of our horse, Caleb Jones, growing up and all of our horse riding lessons. Being in Louisville, especially during the time of the Kentucky Derby, is a wonderful experience. The atmosphere is just energetic and captivating – there’s nothing like it! It would be great to have my family out here around this time so they can also experience this as well.

So, if you are still looking for a hat or derby attire, there is still time and make sure to check out the hat selection at Dillard’s in Louisville! Hope all is well and Happy Derby Week, everyone!

Best Wishes,
Karen
