UPDATE: MORE PICTURES!!!

Rio from my patio

I have spent my first day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The travel started off interesting – we had some weather in Tennessee and in Georgia, so our flight was delayed.  The flight staff did not know whether or not we were even going to be able to leave Knoxville, but eventually – it all worked out and I made it to my connecting flight in Atlanta. 🙂

My flight to Rio was just about nine hours, but it definitely did not feel like that.  I basically went to sleep and woke up when they were serving coffee (but of course!).  I arrived into Rio de Janeiro at around 9 a.m., and I realized that we were only about an hour ahead of EST.  I got my luggage – which for me is a first when I have done international traveling.  Usually it gets lost or ends up in another country, but it all worked out in the end.  Rio de Janeiro reminds me a lot of both Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa  – with the traffic situation similar to Beijing.  The landscape and view of the city is just gorgeous, and you have the city aspect as well.  It took me about an hour to get to my hotel due to the traffic – but it is Monday and people were most likely heading to work.

My first day in Rio de Janeiro was relaxing – I got a chance to walk down on Copocabana Beach and take in the natural atmosphere and sites.  The beach was relatively crowded – but at the same time it was calm.  There were numerous stands where people were selling foods or other goods.  I got a chance to stop at a restaurant where I had lasagna – Brazilian style.  It was amazing!  I loved it – and I am sure that Jenny Craig will understand. 🙂

So, what is up next?  Well, Kristin is flying in tomorrow, and we will have the day to relax and get ready for the RI Conference.  The Conference starts on Wednesday, and we will be presenting on the 20th.  Will keep you all posted!  Hope you all are having a wonderful day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
