Got Social Media?  Oh yes, we sure do! 🙂

We are in an age where it is common practice to incorporate social media into our public relations campaigns and in the classroom.  There are so many opportunities to use social media to get the messages across to our target audiences.  I had the opportunity to be a judge for our Advertising Campaigns class last week (thank you again Dr. Morrison for giving me the opportunity to participate), and I was very impressed with the creativity and strategic mindset of the students on how they incorporated Facebook and Twitter into their campaigns. 🙂

Right now, marketers and public relations professionals have to be very strategic and cautious about what information they are posting, what social media platforms they are using, and the communication messages being disseminated.  AdAge has a great article on some helpful suggestions about how marketers and other communication specialists (ex. public relations) can learn from the recent crises that have occured in connection with social media (ex. Domino’s, Swine Flu) to their advantage.

Another trend that seems to be happening is the call for professionals to use social media not only to communicate specfic messages to their audiences, but to move towards being more rigorous and active in a strategic manner.  I think that social media will continue to evolve along with the public relations profession.  I believe that it is important for PR professionals to be aware of what is the latest technology being used in their industry as well as among their publics.  However, there are some that believe that social media in some circumstances is bad for public relations.  Personally, I believe that there needs to be a balance – I think that we as PR professionals need to have both a stable and beneficial relationship with our audiences both online as well as in real life.

Hope you all are having a great day. 🙂

Best Wishes,

Karen
