It is not every day you hear someone go, “I am heading to a safari… in South Africa!”  Well, this is what I heard from my Dad this time last year – and what is amazing to see is the fact that we are at this point where Dad is heading to Joburg (otherwise known as Johannesburg) in just a few days for his safari trip.

I have very fond memories of the three months I spent down in South Africa during the summer of 2007.  I went and worked in a PR firm called Total Media in Cape Town, South Africa as part of the international internship program at USC.  This one trip was a life changing moment for me both professionally and personally.

Here I am on top of Table Top Mountain in 2007

First, I was able to really learn about the agency lifestyle and PR practices in another country – great hands on training, writing opportunities, and of course calling Prada the second day on the job in Milan.  Second, I was able to experience the beauty of the country while making new friends.  Enjoying the landmarks and sampling the cuisine was absolutely wonderful – I had so many amazing memories of the three months I was in South Africa.

Sharing these stories, things to see and do in the country, photos, and recipes with my family from South Africa was also very enjoyable as well. Dad really got interested in learning the cuisine, history, and culture during and after my trip.  He has made some amazing South African entrees like Bobotie and of course Amarula Carrot Cake.

Dad always mentioned how cool it would be to go there.  Now, Dad is heading to spend a week in Johannesburg on a safari and promises Mom, Kristin, Karla, and I that he will be keeping us updated with stories and lots of pictures from his adventures!  I have told Dad about things he needs to try out when he is in the country along with some things to note while traveling down to SA (ex. exchange rate for the dollar to the rand, etc).  I am really looking forward to hearing and seeing what Dad thinks about South Africa.

Safe travels to South Africa, Dad – I hope you have an amazing time and you enjoy the country as much as I did five years ago! Love you Dad!

Hope you all are having a wonderful day.

Best Wishes,

Karen
