There are a lot of benefits that social media outlets like Twitter have to offer to professionals working in the communication fields.  It is a way to communicate and interact with others while at the same time implementing strategies for their client. From CNN to Fox News to ABC – it appears that all of the major news outlets are incorporating social media in their reporting.

However, one of the main professions that seems to be using social media are journalists.  I have several friends from both USC and Tennessee that are on Twitter that are in journalism, and it is interesting to see how they use this social medium.  Here is a good article from Mashable that provides a guide for journalists that want to use Twitter.  From creating social networks with other journalists online to providing the right media tools to providing insightful videos on how to use Twitter to report stories.

There are so many benefits to using social media like Twitter for journalists in my opinion.  Journalists have to adapt to the ever changing business and technological environment by recognizing that more people are going online for their news.  Plus, newspapers are closing more by the day, and so they have to take their stories to the Internet.  Plus, it is also another tool to establish your personal and professional social reputation.  It is a way to create credibility as a trustworthy source among individuals in your local community to those living in other countries.  In many ways, social media is changing how we operate and communicate in our business environemnt.

There are numerous resources available online for all communication professionals.  Even though this is a guide for journalists, public relations professionals need to be aware of this as well.  We interact with journalists in our profession, and we have to understand where they are getting their information, how they use social media, and what sources they deem to be credible.

Hope you all are having a great day. 🙂

Best Wishes,

Karen
