I am fondly reminded that the “J” in the Acronym “AEJMC” stands for “Journalism.” No one spoke or blogged more eloquently than my Uncle Leroy. I have to say that even his emails ( which is how our far flung family so often communicates) were poetic. I was very impressed with his blog at Nightline and with NPR while he was documenting his torturous experience with cancer and his willingness to write everyone back who took the time to write to him.
When Uncle Leroy was in Iraq covering the last invasion, my sister (the oldest of his 3 nieces) was there as a combat engineer. In our family, it is a small world.
I always smiled when we talked about what I do, Leroy Sievers viewed Public Relations academics and professionals with a skeptical eye. I always got the impression that he viewed us as journalists seduced by the dark side of the force! So clearly, when I informed him of my choice of major at Florida then in graduate school at Southern Cal, Uncle Leroy seemed a bit worried, but he was always very supportive. The fact is that he always had time for budding journalists in search of advice, even those of us on the dark side.
Uncle Leroy has been gone two years now this month, but I wish I could talk with him about social media and the new media. I am sure that would have gotten him going! 😉
