In my classes and talking with fellow researchers and public relations professionals, we have been talking a lot about the impact that social media has had on the profession.  There are still some of the practices that are staying the same, however, there are certainly some major changes that social media has brought to the table for public relations professionals.

It seems just this past year that Facebook and Twitter were being labeled as the next big thing for social media, however, there seems to be more focus now on mobile marketing and mobile applications for public relations professionals.  It is certainly one of the largest and fastest growing markets currently, and it is indeed a form of communication that we as public relations professionals need to be aware of.  Not only the fact that this is a growing market, but there are other things that public relations professionals need to consider.  We need to be aware of the growing trends of these localized based applications that people and businesses are using (ex. Gowalla and Foursquare) along with how to use these strategically in Public Relations.

From designing coupons that can be sent to phones directly to having deals and announcements on where to get more information in a crisis situation – there are so many different possibilities to consider.  We also have to be aware of the networking opportunities as well.  We as public relations professionals need to be aware of how we can use mobile technology in sending out mobile portfolios of our work and resumes to potential employers, as well as making strong networking connections by using mobile marketing.

In many ways, we are living in a very exciting time where technology is growing rapidly and really making an impact on the public relations profession.  It is sometimes hard to keep up with it, but it is very engaging and fun to witness and be a part of! 🙂

Hope you all are having a great day!

Best Wishes,

Karen
