One of the things that I am constantly amazed about is the things and activities that some people participate in. Whether it is a high profile celebrity endorser that is a middle of a huge PR nightmare (ex. Michael Vick) to political PR nightmares (South Carolina Governor) to the average day person.
However, what is fascinating is the fact that social media (Facebook, Twitter, the Internet, blogs, YouTube, etc.) has really made an impact on how people are viewing this information, what impressions they are taking away from these sites, and how it influences how they perceive others and their reputation. There are numerous social media / PR nightmares that could possible happen on these various sites like Facebook and Twitter, and it is important to know how to address these appropriately and in a professional manner.
Most of these issues and topics have come up due to the increasing use of social media for job search opportunities. There are definitely ways to use social media proactively in getting a job. However, there are other challenges that arise for employees and how they are using social media, and how their behavior online impacts the business they are working at. Employees today are viewed more as brand ambassadors, messengers, and supporters of the corporation to the public.
Of course, the important thing to recognize is the fact that yes – social media has changed a lot in terms of business practices and what information see about a person – but it all starts with the behavior of the individual! People have to recognize that they can’t post whatever they want online and not be ready to face the consequences and repercussions of their actions. In other words, be proactive and recognize that we are living in a very digital age where everyone around the world can see information about you. Plus, unlike a few decades ago where people would write a story and it would appear in the newspaper and eventually blow over – we are now living in a time where if it is online – it stays online forever. People now more than ever have to be forward-thinking in managing their reputation.
Hope you all are having a great day!
Best Wishes,
Karen
